The Sri Lanka Army has allocated another 23 officers’ bungalows at Diyathalawa for quarantine purposes, said Army Commander and Acting Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva. Speaking to the Daily News, he said that the Army currently operates 12 quarantine centres and in addition, these bungalows would be utilized as well.

Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne said the government was fully geared to ensure the protection of the country’s 21.4 million population from coronavirus or COVID-19, today.

Dismissing social media reports that Foreign Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardana has contracted COVID-19 through a ministry official, the ministry said yesterday he had not come into contact with the said officer who returned to Colombo on March 8.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday proposed to leaders of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to formulate a collective response to combat COVID – 19. He further called for SAARC Ministerial Meeting to discuss measures to overcome this deadly health threat.

In the wake of the COVID-19 threat, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to not attend any public events to raise awareness on the importance of minimising public gatherings.

Sri Lanka government has been urged to form an expert advisory panel consisting experts in infectious diseases, pediatrics, emergency medicine and internal medicine, economic experts, disaster management specialists to take decisions and make guidance regarding Covid-19 mitigation and prevention strategies for mass gatherings, civil society activists said.

While rejecting rumours spreading on social media, the Commissioner of Examinations said that no decision had taken to postpone the GCE A/L 2020 examination to November.
