How Sri Lanka can exit from the $ 1.8 billion loan for the Light Railway Transit (LRT) system and whether it will have to repay $ 19 million already disbursed to carry out preliminary work for the now cancelled project will be explored by the Finance Ministry, a top official said yesterday.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday diverse opinions within the government over the 20th Amendment would converge into one voice with necessary amendments being introduced during the committee stage of the debate and there was no problem with regard to obtaining the necessary two-thirds majority for the passage of the Bill.

The amendments the Government intends to move to the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution (20A) Bill at its Committee Stage will include increasing the period that must elapse before the President may use his powers to dissolve Parliament to two-and-a-half years, while in the draft 20A Bill, the President could dissolve Parliament after a year.
