Excise dept claims Rs. 68 Bn generated through fines

This year the Excise Department conducted 24,150 raids across the country against illicit brewers and collected fines worth Rs 68 billion.

Issuing a press release yesterday (04 July), the Department said that by the month of July this year, the Department has generated Rs.68 billion in excise revenue more than half of the excise revenue target for 2019 which is Rs. 130 billion.

“These raids have been carried out under the charges of brewing illicit liquor, possession of such liquor, possession of illegally distilled spirits, possession of distillery equipment, sale of illicit liquor and illegal sale of foreign liquor,” Government news portal news.lk quoted Excise Commissioner General H.G. Sumanasinghe as saying.

‘In the year 2018, a total of 49,312 raids have been conducted and revenue of Rs. 253 million has been generated as a result,’ the Excise Department added.
