Sri Lanka will be strictly monitoring the corona virus transmission level next month ( April) as the spread of the Covid-19 enters the significant period of six to eight weeks, informed sources revealed.
There would be an upsurge in April, possible peak in May/June and a downturn later in the year, several scientific experts predicted
Sri Lanka extended a work from home period to April 03, and has enforced indefinite Coronavirus curfews on three districts with authorities making a final effort to stop any remaining unidentified carriers infecting others.
Since the Wave II surge of the epidemic began with infected returnees from countries other than China in March daily growth of confirmed patients had been in the single or low double digits.
Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today predicted several situations which the government was likely to face from April 4 to 11 as highlighted by some health sector officials.
"They had warned that COVID-19 would peak from April 4 to April 11 and therefore it is important to have a common plan, which the public and private sector stakeholders in the health sector could follow, he said.
He urged the government to hold discussions among all stakeholders in the health sector, produce or import of ventilators, masks.
It must also ensure that there is sufficient beds in hospitals, initiate a private/public supply chain to supply essential goods and use even ordinary three-wheelers other than taxi service companies and introduce special laws as done by many other countries worldwide," Mr Wickremesinghe said in a statement.
"One must also consider the statement made by the GMOA where it said there may be some 500 cases of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka; he said adding that USA has become a centre of the pandemic which is a shift from Western Europe.
He noted that The situation in India should also be taken into consideration as it is our neighbor."
