The Election Commission has initiated discussion with the health authorities to formulate a manual of guidelines to conduct the parliamentary elections in a COVID- 19 contained environment instead of waiting for its total eradication, an informed source said.

The National Identity Card (NIC) rule will be in effect only from 11 May and not immediately, the Police said today.

Sri Lanka’s private sector establishments affected by the COVID-19 crisis have been directed to submit a self assessment on the impact of the ongoing pandemic on the sustenance of institutions and employees.

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday dismissed as “absurd” the contention by the Opposition that the President cannot allocate funds after the lapse of the Vote on Account (VoA) and said any questions on expenditure can be raised once the new Parliament is convened.
