The health inspectors of the Jaffna, Karaveddi area had sealed five restaurants in the area recently during a raid, while legal action was taken against another 13 restaurants for serving unhygienic food.
At the time of the raids in the Jaffna, Karaveddi, Nelliadi, Nawalarmadam and Wallai areas most of the restaurants were in the process of preparing food using discarded vegetables. The health inspectors had ordered all these vegetables to be buried.
According to the health inspectors the Jaffna is the only town serving the most unhygienic food.
Having received many complaints, Northern Province Governor Suren Raghavan had instructed the health inspectors to conduct constant raids and stringent checks on all restaurants and establishments serving food items.
