Immigration officers threaten TU action within 48 hours

Immigration and Emigration Department Officers’ (IEDO) Trade Union President K.A.S. Kanugala said they would take action at airports, ports and other places where its members were employed if the government failed to resolve their problems within the next 48 hours.

“Relevant authorities have failed to address the pressing issues faced by immigration and emigration officers. When IEDO resorted to trade union action last year, a discussion was held with President Maithripala Sirisena on May 18, 2018, and relevant authorities were instructed to take apt measures in solving our problems. On the one hand, a committee was appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to look into our grievances, but to no avail. On the other, the Ranugge Salary Commission which was appointed by the President did not make any recommendation to address our issues,” he said.

He said the subject minister promised to submit a cabinet memorandum within a month when the trade union stressed the need to solve its service problems.

“When we finally met the minister yesterday, we informed him about the decision to take TU action at airports and ports if the government did not intervene to solve our problems within 48 hours,” he said.
