The trade unions of school teachers and Principals are threatening an island wide strike on September 26 and 27 if their demands are not met as promised by the Government.
The General Secretary of Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union, Mahinda Jayasinghe said the strike will take place parallel to a protest in Colombo Fort on September 26.
About 30 unions representing teachers and principals across the country are expected to take part in the protest.
“We first launched a one-day strike on March 13 this year. We were promised answers but even after five months the Government has failed to honour its promise,” Jayasinghe said. Their demands include ending the long-standing salary anomalies.
According to Jayasinghe if their salary anomaly is addressed their salaries would increase by: Rs 31,000 for Grade 1 teachers; Rs 23,000 for Grade 2 I; Rs14,000 for Grade 2 II and Rs. 10,000 for Grade 3 I.
