Shelter for war heroes becomes a distant dream

Shelter for war heroes has become a distant dream due to the failure in implementing Semata Sevana Viru Sumithuru” housing Programme owing to inefficiency and irregularities of the National Housing Development Authorit, informed sources claimed.

Under the “Semata Sevana Viru Sumithuru” Programme, the construction of 3650 housing units have been commenced to meet the housing requirements of deprived families of war heroes of Tri Forces, Sri Lanka Police and Civil Security Force who retired on being disabled and sacrificed their lives and limbs in the battle field.

This programme was officially launched under the patronage of His Excellency the President on 05th July 2017 in Colombo.

Covering the period from 2017 to 2020, its targets will be satisfied and for this purpose, Rs.3,192 Million has been laid as the investment by the Government.

Under this, housing aid of Rs.1,200,000 will be conferred to build a new house under non- recovery basis and aid of Rs. 500,000 will be granted to renovate an existing house.

This project,which is being implemented by the National Housing Development Authority in amalgamation with the Ranaviru Authority, had planned to construct 913 houses on an estimate of expenditure amounting to Rs.798.1 million.

Out of them, only 49 houses had been constructed despite provisions of Rs.150 million made in the year under review therefore.

Accordingly, only 5 per cent out of the number of houses to be completed by the end of the year under review, had completed constructions
