A glass of fresh milk will be provided as part of a national programme for schoolchildren starting tomorrow (23) under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at Kalawana Shathodaya Vidyalaya in Ratnapura.
Under the first phase of the programme, launched with the theme Kiren Sapiri Deyak (Nation Rich with Milk), some 400,000 students in 950 primary schools will begin receiving a glass of fresh milk daily. The programme will be expanded to cover the entire country and its 1.7 million primary students.
The scheme carried out under the Grama Shakthi programme will offer every student a packet of 150ml milk. A mechanism was set up to recycle the used milk packets providing students with a positive feedback about garbage management and recycling.
