Report sought from CID after Rathana Thera complains

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne called for a report from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), following a complaint made by Parliamentarian Ven. Athureliye Rathana Thera accusing the CID of mishandling investigations into Kurunegala doctor Dr. Shafi Siyabdeen.

Speaking to media, the Parliamentarian accused the CID of unnecessarily instilling fear in the minds of the witnesses regarding court proceedings.

In a two-page letter addressed to the IGP, Ven. Athureliye Rathana Thera mentions that officers at the hospital had told him that the hospital received complaints from 850 women against the doctor.

He further stated that no action or investigations have been carried out to further probe into the matter of the illegal tube litigation surgeries carried out by Dr. Shafi.

The thera further mentioned that it was questionable as to whether a comprehensive investigation was carried out into the doctor’s actions.
