Leaders of UNF constituent parties, all religious dignitaries, civil organizations, university community, scholars, and sections of intelligentsia, artistes and leaders of youth organizations have unanimously agreed to propose the name of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as the Presidential candidate of the alliance.
A group of Buddhist priests will be meeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe with the blessings of Mhanayake theras to make this request today.
Meanwhile a group of civil society activists, University professors and lecturers, scholars and intellectuals will put forward the same proposal to the Prime Minister on Sunday 15.
The majority of UNP working committee and parliamentary group members will be meeting the Prime Minister on Monday 16 to convey their decision to support Karu Jayasuriya’s candidacy.
However it has been revealed that 40 members of the UNP working committee,, 32 members of the parliamentary group are supporting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to hold te leadership of the party. .
