UNP MP Ashu Marasinghe says that all 225 MPs should publish their declarations of assets and liabilities voluntarily in the public domain.
“This will help open Parliament to the people and promote a culture of transparency and accountability, further bridging the gap between the people and their representatives,” he said at the daily press briefing held at Temple Tress yesterday, MP Marasinghe said that all 225 public representatives in Parliament should handover their declaration of assets and liabilities to the Parliament Secretary General to show their interest in strengthening their accountability and as an example of their commitment to an open democracy.
Accordingly several MPs have already handed over their declarations of assets and liabilities to the Secretary General of Parliament.
Some of them have joined the “March 12” movement and published their declaration of assets and liabilities in the web. “MPs and Cabinet ministers are responsible to the people. They have to show the public that any increase in their assets is justifiable and the people should be able to witness it,”he said.
