Millions of Sri Lankans will go to the polls today to elect members to Sri Lanka’s Ninth Parliament, after an election campaign eclipsed by the outbreak of COVID-19.

Election Commission (EC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday sought to dispel fears that election rigging could take place as the counting of votes has been fixed for the day after the poll, saying all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure there are no irregularities.

The Constitutional Council is scheduled to meet today (03) at the Speakers Residence under the chairmanship of the former Speaker of the 8 th Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.

Police personnel have been allowed to use their firearms during the election period should the need arise such as a tense situation, Police Media Division Director SSP Jaliya Senaratne told a media briefing today.

පාර්ලිමේන්තු මැතිවරණයේ ඡන්ද විමසීම 05 වැනිදා (බදාදා) සවස අවසන්වීමෙන් පසු එම ඡන්ද පෙට්ටි 06 වැනිදා පෙරවරුව තෙක් ගබඩා කර තිබෙන කාමරවල දොර, ජනෙල් පවා මුද්‍රා තබන බව මැතිවරණ කොමිෂන් සභාව සඳහන් කරයි.
