Tax on imported dried chillies and fish reduced

The Government has taken measures to reduce tax on imported dried chillies and fish by Rs.20 and Rs.75 per kilogramme respectively.

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Irrigation and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development P. Harrison said the decision was taken by the Cost of Living Committee

The minister said the tax on a kilogramme of dried chilli would be reduced from Rs.25 to Rs.5 while the tax on a kilogramme of fish would be reduced from Rs.100 to Rs. 25.

The minister speaking to journalists in Colombo also said that the committee had also approved the import of chicken and eggs to control the prices in the local market considering the high demand during the upcoming festive season.

Also a decision was taken to convert 48,000 tons of paddy stored in government warehouses to rice and sell a kilogramme of nadu rice for Rs.80 and a kilogramme of samba rice for Rs.85, he added.
