The Ministry of Education this week will take a final decision on whether the GCE Advanced Level (A/L) and Grade Five Scholarship examinations will be held on the scheduled dates, according to Secretary to the Ministry N.H.M. Chithrananda.
He told The Morning that a discussion was held at the Ministry yesterday (13) to discuss whether to hold the examinations as scheduled or to postpone.
“We didn’t take a final decision as yet and are awaiting Minister Dullas Alahapperuma’s approval on it,” he said.
According to Chithrananda, the Ministry would take a final decision today (14) or tomorrow (15).
Earlier, Alahapperuma said it was not possible to hold national examinations amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Hence, ministry officials are awaiting the response of the health authorities.
Commissioner General of Examination B. Sanath Pujitha said the dates for the GCE A/L and Grade Five Scholarship examinations have not been finalised.
“We still don’t have a final examination timetable for GCE A/L. There is no truth in the document that this year’s A/L timetable is circulating on social media.”
Pujitha called upon the public including students to act responsibly and go by the official announcements issued by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Examinations.
Meanwhile, all schools in the country are currently closed till 17 July, following the development of a new Covid-19 cluster in the country.
Accordingly, all private schools, international schools, and tuition classes are also closed. Also in line with the Government’s decision to close schools, all Catholic schools will be closed on the same dates until further notice.
