Celebrate Christmas humbly – Cardinal Ranjith

Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith requests the Christian community in Sri Lanka to celebrate Christmas humbly this year as it is what the religion teaches, and also due to the added reason of the Easter Sunday carnage that occurred in April this year.

Nearly 300 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured on April 21 this year, the most atrocious disaster in recent history in the entire world. “Some of the victims are still unconscious and are in hospitals.

There are many families completely broken and living in a hopeless situation” the Cardinal told the media last Thursday at the Archbishop’s House, Colombo.

He said, “We cannot ignore these people. Therefore, it is important to celebrate this Christmas in a humble way. Do enjoy Christmas, have a family gathering and give gifts to each other. But in all these things please think about the people who suffered in the terrible incident”.

The Cardinal also requested the Christian community to make this Christmas an opportunity to help the survivors of the Easter Sunday attack.

The Government has promised to provide additional security for Christmas celebrations and religious activities, the Cardinal added.
