President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to pardon and release Ven. Galagodatte Gnanasara Thero from prison has endangered the lives of the family of disappeared journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, his wife Sandya said.
In a letter written to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (24), Sandya Ekneligoda requested security for her family, arguing that the controversial Buddhist monk’s release has put the lives of her and her children in a “seriously unsafe” position.
Supporters of Gnanasara Thero including fellow monks, she said, had continued to verbally abuse her even while he was in prison. Since his release, supporters have engaged in abusive vitriol on social media, she added.
“His followers will not hesitate to take the law into their own hands. History bears witness to this,” said Ekneligoda.
