Minimum price of bread should be Rs. 100: Bakery Owners’ Assn.

With the current increase in prices of bakery ingredients, the minimum price of a 450g loaf of bread should be sold at Rs. 100, the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA) said.

ACBOA President N.K. Jayawardene said there is a massive wheat flour shortage prevailing in the country.

"There are only two wheat flour manufacturing companies in the country, and those companies have to import the grains. In order to do so, they claim that they are faced with dollar issue. Therefore, by yesterday, the price of a kilogram of wheat flour in the local market had been increased by Rs. 18.50 for the first time in the country's history," he said.

"Earlier, the wheat flour price was increased by Rs. 8 or Rs. 10. A month earlier, the wheat flour companies had increased their prices by Rs.10," he said.

The prices of all ingredients used to make bread, except water, have already been increased, Mr. Jayawardene added. (Daily Mirror)
