People mesmerised by ’vaccine festival’; dishonour health rules: PHIU

People are now living in a mesmerised atmosphere due to the vaccination festival, as such they do not realize about following basic health guidelines, the Public Health Inspectors (PHI) Union said.

(PHI) Union Head Upul Rohana told the Daily Mirror that if people do not behave wisely and adhering to the health guidelines, we need to care for more and more COVID-infected people in the future.

"The number of COVID positive cases is increasing in our society, and we have come to a certain point where our staffers cannot handle the capacity. Due to lack of facilities and the number of offices operating at the ground level, "we cannot attend to each and every COVID-infected family," he said.

"We have no manpower or any other device to enter the number of COVID patients found in the field every day. All those patients found from a certain area are brought to the area MOH offices. Most MOH offices have only one computer to enter the data into the database. A person in the MOH office has to enter the data into the system and some offices have no operator to enter the data. In such a situation, the data entry is delayed by a day or more, "he said.

"Every day, a large number of patients reported from MOH divisions. Until the data of those patients are entered in the system, we will not get the exact number of cases. That was why we mention that there is a higher number of positive cases which are not entered in the system," he said.

Patients who cannot take care of themselves alone are sent home for quarantine, and the data of those who are not fed into the system, Mr. Rohana said.

"Now people used to behave in a very careless manner because of the vaccine programmes. They blindly think that they will not be infected with the virus again and forget that their children need not be immunized. Most of them don't wear the face mask properly. Many retail fabric vendors in Pamunuwa, Maharagama were opened even yesterday, and many people were seen shopping there, "he said.

Until people take their health seriously and adhere to the health guidelines, the spread of the COVID virus is uncontrollable, Mr. Rohana added. (Daily Mirror)
