At least 40 high profile criminals, including Kanjipani Imran, Wele Suda, Kosgoda Tharaka and Podi Lassi who are detained at the Boossa Prison, Galle launched a hunger strike on Thursday morning (10) over several demands.

It was reported that only 20 inmates are continuing in the strike action by refusing food.

However, several detainees had abandoned their strike, knowing that their demands will not be considered by the authorities.

Sources said that latest criminals among those who abandoned the hunger strike were, Potta Naufer, Kavuma and Army Sampath.

They were protesting against the restriction on visitors, removal of telephone facilities, search operations carried out on the inmates when they were brought to the Prison after being produced in the courts and demanding to increase the weekly amount that they can pay to purchase additional meals.

On Friday, ‘Kanjipani Imran’, who engaged in the hunger strike, was transferred to the Navy Hospital in Boossa.
