Strict action against contractors supplying drugs to construction workers

Special raids were carried out in the Western Province on Saturday following the information of that narcotics were being given to the workers at construction sites by contractors, Police said.

They said at least 48 workers had been arrested in possession of heroin, cannabis, Ice and other narcotics and illegal liquor during the raids.

They said more than 6,500 workers were searched during those raids.

Strict legal actions would be taken against such contractors who supply narcotics for constructions workers to increase the workers output.

Meanwhile, the Police also carried out special operations to identify reckless drivers and nearly 50 drivers were taken into the custody.

The Police said a total of 4,337 vehicles including 827 tipper type trucks and 630 other heavy vehicles were examined by the Police and Motor Traffic Inspectors within two -hours on Saturday in the Western Province alone.

“Twenty-nine drivers were without driving licenses, while eight were booked for driving vehicles without fitness (Roadworthy) certificates for and seven persons who were under the influence of drugs were also taken into the custody,” an officer said.

Meanwhile, nearly 700 persons had been arrested with drugs during 24-hour raids conducted in the Western Province.

They said 261 persons were arrested with over 100 grams of heroin while 184 persons arrested with 884 grams of cannabis during the raids.
