Madush seeks bail

Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake yesterday (09) rejected a bail request for 'Samarasinghe Arachchige Madush Lakshitha' alias 'Makandure Madush.

The request was made by his lawyer - Attorney-at-Law Jaliya Samarasinghe, who stated that his client has been in CID custody since being deported from Dubai last year, but no charges have been filed against him.

Attorney-at-Law Jaliya Samarasinghe told the court that his client was being held on a detention order issued by former President Maithripala Sirisena. Since the detention order had expired, its validity was questionable, he added.

However, the Fort Magistrate stated that his court does not have the power to make such an order as Makandure Madush has not been named as a suspect so far. The magistrate added that an action of a former President should be challenged in Supreme Court and not in a Magistrate court.
