The opening of the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake to tourists could be delayed further, say sources in the Ministry of Tourism.
Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism S. Hettiarachchi says that the period when the airport can be fully opened without healthcare regulations is uncertain.
However, the government had earlier announced that the Bandaranaike International Airport would be opened next October.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism says that the airport can be fully opened to foreigners based on the instructions given by the health authorities.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it will take another two years for the COVID-19 pandemic to be completely eradicated and the Secretary states that when taking this matter into consideration it is difficult to relax healthcare regulations.
