State of Emergency passed in Parliament

The extension of State of Emergency has been passed in the Parliament by 14 majority votes.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA ) asked a vote at the end of the emergency extension debate.

Accordingly, 22 parliamentarians have voted in favour of extending the State of Emergency by another month, while 8 parliamentarians of the Tamil National Alliance had voted against.

Parliamentarians from the United National Party (UNP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) who were present voted to extend the emergency.

During the debate the absence of ruling party MPs and security heads was heavily criticized by the opposition and stated that during such a debate if not the heads of security at least their representatives should have attended the parliament.
