Rioters to be charged under ICCPR regulations: PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered the police to charge those involved in riotous acts on May 12 and 13 under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act and emergency regulations, it is learnt.

According to his office, the situation had been brought under control by the police and the security forces by yesterday. Those involved in violence has been produced before court and remanded at the moment.

Violence was reported in areas such as Wariyapola, Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, Nikaweratiya, Chilaw, Puttalam and Minuwangoda.

The police arrested 14 persons in connection with incidents in Minuwangoda and nine of them were remanded till May 29 after being produced before court. The remaining five persons will be produced be before court soon.

Moreover, 60 persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in violent acts in the northwestern province and the curfew violation. Nine of them were produced before court and remanded till May 27. Steps have been taken to send two police teams headed by two DIGs to assist in investigations.

The Prime Minister has instructed the acting IGP to impose curfew when and where necessary.
