Railway employees told to report to work today, leave cancelled

All Railway employees have been instructed to report to work as their leave has been cancelled after railways was declared an essential service.

The Presidential Secretariat issued a gazette declaring Railways as an essential service, in the backdrop of an ongoing indefinite strike action by employees. The law states that any attempt to disrupt an essential service will be considered as an offence.The Railway Department has cancelled leave of all railway employees since it has been gazetted as an essential service. All employees of the Railway Department had been instructed to return to work immediately.

The government had decided to take this measure considering the ongoing railway strike, which entered its ninth consecutive day yesterday causing inconveniences for thousands of commuters.

Accordingly, the Department of Railway is required to provide efficient and uninterrupted operation of transport services for passengers and goods by rail and railway lines, their maintenance and provision of proper security measures, signalling systems and their functioning, issuance of tickets.
