JVP leader Anura Dissanayaka says the hidden agenda behind the government's hasty decision to import organic fertilizer is "to create an opportunity for one of the cronies loyal to the government to import organic fertilizer to Sri Lanka."
He said the government is more keen on importing fertilizer than preventing the use of chemical fertilizer and" this clearly demonstrates that there is some hidden agenda behind all these moves."
He said organic fertilizer can not be imported to the country under the quarantine laws and as well as fauna flora acts.
"Now the government has appointed a committee to handle the importing of organic fertilizer and a particular business is also included in this committee. This businessman has been playing a key business role in all government projects these days," he added.
He said the government's ad-hoc decision to ban chemical fertilizer has dealt a severe blow to the farmers.
"The government imposed the ban without introducing an alternative and this has caused severe hardships to the farming community.
