The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa registered a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections on Wednesday as it secured of 6,853,690 votes (59.09%).

Millions of Sri Lankans will go to the polls today to elect members to Sri Lanka’s Ninth Parliament, after an election campaign eclipsed by the outbreak of COVID-19.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), led by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, secured a resounding victory in Wednesday’s Parliamentary Elections, by winning 146 of the 225 up for grabs, just four short of the coveted 150 seats needed to secure a two-thirds majority in the Legislature.

SLPP Leader and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that they will make arrangements to get a two thirds majority created in parliament if the party did not receive it at the General Election.

Police personnel have been allowed to use their firearms during the election period should the need arise such as a tense situation, Police Media Division Director SSP Jaliya Senaratne told a media briefing today.

The Army was temporarily deployed to provide security for VIPs as the Police was out on duty at the 2020 General Election, Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva told Colombo Gazette.

මෙවර මැතිවරණ දිස්ත්‍රික්ක 22 සඳහා අපේක්ෂකයින් 7452 දෙනෙකු පිළිගත් දේශපාලන පක්ෂ 20ක් සහ ස්වාධින කණ්ඩායම් 34ක් නියෝජනය කරමින් ඉදිරිපත්ව සිටින අතර ඉන් මන්ත්‍රිවරුවන් 196 දෙනෙකු පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තෝරා පත් කර ගැනීමට නියමිතය.

ඡන්ද පොළ සම්බන්ධයෙන් කිසිඳු බියක් ඇතිකර ගතයුතු නොමැති බවත්, ඡන්දපොළ සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම සෞඛ්‍යාරක්ෂිත බවත්, මැතිවරණ කොමිසමේ සභාපති මහින්ද දේශප්‍රිය මහතා පවසයි.

මෙවර පාර්ලිමේන්තු මැතිවරණයේ ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිඵල 6 වනදා මධ්‍යම රාත්‍රියට පෙර ලබාදීමට හැකිවනු ඇති බව මැතිවරණ කොමිසමේ සභාපති මහින්ද දේශප්‍රිය පවසනවා. මනාප ප්‍රතිඵල 07 වනදා මධ්‍යම රාත්‍රියට පෙර ලබාදීමට හැකිවනු ඇති බවට අපේක්ෂා කරන බව මැතිවරණ කොමිසමේ සභාපතිවරයා සඳහන් කළේ.

යම් මැතිවරණ කොට්ඨාශයක මන්ත්‍රිවරයෙකු තේරීපත් වී නොමැති නම් මනාප ගණනය සිදුනොකරන බව මැතිවරණ කොමිෂන් සභාව පවසනවා.

මහමැතිවරණයේදී සියයට 71 කට ආසන්න ඡන්ද දායකයින් පිරිසක් තම ඡන්දය ප‍්‍රකාශ කිරීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් ජනාධිපති ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා විශේෂ ස්තුතියක් පළ කර තිබෙනවා. ජනාධිපතිවරයා පවසන්නේ කොරෝනා අවදානම ලෝකයෙන් තවමත් පහව ගොස් නොමැති අවස්ථාවක මහමැතිවරණයක් පැවැත්වූ දකුණු ආසියාවේ පළමු රට ශී‍්‍ර ලංකාව බවයි. ඒ වෙනුවෙන් ජනතාව අපගේ සෞඛ්‍යාරක්ෂිත ක‍්‍රමවේදයන් මත තැබූ විශ්වාසය පිළිබද තමා ස්තූතිවන්ත වන බවයි ජනාධිපති ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා වැඩිදුරටත් පවසන්නේ.

Voting for the General Election-2020 commenced a short while ago at 12,985 polling stations island-wide with 16,263,885 eligible voters.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has summoned the new Parliament on 20th August 2020.
