In order to issue a permit for the import of 50,000 metric tons of maize, a prominent minister is said to have demanded One rupee per kilo as commission, it is reported.

Accordingly, the minister is expected to get a commission of 50 million for the import of the consignment of maize.

Meanwhile, while there is a requirement for 80,000 metric tons of maize, the Cabinet recently approved the import of 50,000 metric tons of maize.

This stock of maize should be imported to the country prior to January 31st next year.

During the last Maha season almost 80% of the maize harvest was destroyed due to the ‘Sena’ caterpillar infestation.
