The Megapolis and Western Development Ministry says that a boat service will be launched today (22 August), operating along the Beira Lake from Union Place to Colombo Fort, the Project Manager Ranushi Jayasekara told RepublicNext.
Passengers are said to be able to use the service free of charge for the first month she said.
Officers of the Navy will be deployed to assist in the operation of the boat service which is set to be equipped with safety measures.
The ministry added that the service would be managed by Sri Lanka Reclamation and Development Corporation.
The initiative is expected to help in reducing traffic congestion in the Colombo area.
It was also pointed out that the general public could now travel from Colombo Fort to Union Place in 10 Minutes saving time unlike the other modes of transport.
