Sri Lanka’s semi luxury bus service with a fleet of 450 buses is to be taken out of commuter transportation soon as it has become inconvenienced for the public due to overcrowding.
This decision has been taken by the National Transport Commission (NTC) considering the recommendations of special committee to look into the possibility of phasing out semi-luxury buses.
Bus owners will be allowed to use the buses currently providing semi-luxury services for normal bus services, or upgrade to luxury buses.

Even though a Global Positioning System (GPS) had been introduced for interprovincial buses, it had been introduced only to 08 buses out of 448 semi luxury buses.
It has also been recommended to update the rules for a qualitative Semi Luxury Bus Service, make the bus owners, drivers and conductors aware of such rules and the importance of following the same.
The objective of the Semi Luxury Bus Service is to make opportunity for passengers of long distance service to reach the destination comfortably.
