Country’s very first waste to energy power plant opens in Gampaha soon

Creating a major land mark in the power generation sector, the government will be launching an ambitious programme of commissioning power plants using garbage in all districts in the island.

Sri Lanka’s first such waste to energy power plant will be opened in Hendala Jaela in the Gampaha district next month. as a pilot project Minister Dulles Alahappeuma disclosed.

The project will recycle solid waste within the Colombo Municipal Area to generate 10 mw of power converting 700 metric tonnes of waste into electricity.

He noted that he has issued instructions to officials to implement this waste to energy programme at District level in collaboration with n Urban Development, Cost Conservation, Waste disposal, and Community Cleanliness Ministry.

“First it offers a permanent solution to the Colombo Garbage clearing and then offers Green Energy to the national Grid.” Waste-to-energy power generation is currently one of the world’s most effective and green modes of managing disposal of waste.

Currently around 86% of waste is dumped in the open and only about 6% of this made into compost and about 4 percent of it recycled.
