The task of selecting the two hangmen to fill the existing vacancy at the Welikada Prison has been entrusted to the Presidential Secretariat, according to Prisons Department sources.
This is the first time that such a decision has been taken.
It is reported that based on the applications received and selections made, a list of 26 names is currently at the Presidential Secretariat pending final selection.
The Presidential Secretariat is said to be preparing the two most suitable candidates to fill the vacancy and once the selection is made the Prisons Department would be notified.
The 26 finalists were chosen from a pool of 113 applications that were received to fill the post of hangman and the selected candidates were provided training regarding the position.
The vacancy for the post of hangman has been existing since 2013.
