Sudden wave of strikes paralyses Sri Lanka’s public administration

Sri Lanka’s public administration is on the verge of paralyzing as a result of a wave of strikes and trade union actions of public sector employees with intermittent rains playing havoc countrywide.

Demands related to salary anomalies has become the foremost issue for striking Unions
Sri Lanka Administrative Service Association (SASA) has resorted to indefinite strike action starting from today making the implementation of government decisions impossible ahead of presidential elections.

The chairman of the SASA, Prabhath Chandrakeerthi said this decision was taken as the several rounds of discussions held with the officials of the Ministry of Finance had failed last evening (23).

The association noted that it would solicit the support of several other trade unions for the strike action if the authorities fail to fulfill their demands.

Meanwhile, the Government Executive Officers’ Association has also decided to launch a strike action starting from today (25).
The Association’s chief secretary H.A.L. Udayasiri stated that they would resort to indefinite strike action if the authorities do not heed their demands,

Teachers’ and principals’ unions are also due to launch a 2-day ‘Sick-Note’ campaign on September 26 and 27.

This will be a clear sign that more TU actions are joining the strikers , as the country heads for a Presidential Election on November 16.

University non-academic staff’s strike marked its 14th day today with a total of 27 Unions representing some 16, 000 non-academic staff across 15 State universities and 15 higher education institutes is currently struck work.
