Today is the International Workers' day

Usually, the May Day is celebrated with colorful processions and rallies attended by thousands of people. But this time, owing to COVID-19, all these celebrations have been cancelled.

Labor Commissioner General Prabath Chadrakeerthi says a program is being implemented to safeguard the working class of the country, amid rising challenges.

In Sri Lanka, the active labor force is 8.6 million while the participatory labour force accounts to 52.3 per cent of the population.

The first May day was celebrated for the first time in Sri Lanka in 1927.
