Sri Lanka has spent a staggering amount of Rs 184 billion to import 3353 kg of plastic to Sri Lanka within a period of six years that spanned from 2012 to 2018.
These astonishing figures have been revealed at the parliament's COPE meeting which had examined an environmental assessment report on the import of plastic, it's use and re-use management.
Import data has shown that the import of plastic has steadily risen from 2012 to 2017 and the figure in 2017 was much higher compared to other years.
The committee has pointed out that since the waste management is not properly handled in Sri Lanka, the import of plastic has reached an unbearable level to the country.
