Nation to go silent on 16th anniversary of tsunami at 9.30 a.m. today

The nation will go silent at 9.30 a.m. today to mark the 16th anniversary of tsunami which struck Sri Lanka and Asia in 2004, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.

DMC spokesman Pradeep Kodipili told Daily Mirror that there will be no grand programmes to mark the disaster this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We will be only having religious programmes to mark the disaster because of the Pandemic. All District Secretaries have been asked to organise only religious observances to mark the occasion this year," he added.

The deadly tsunami which struck Sri Lanka on December 26, 2004 had killed more than 40,000 people.(Daily Mirror)
