The special traffic operation for the festive season which was initiated on at 6 a.m. on Sunday (20) morning will continue for a period of two weeks until January 6, 2021.
Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said: “We have arrested 113 drunk drivers and deployed 9,000 Police officers to detect persons who violate road rules. In addition to that we have seized 113 vehicles, including 73 motorcycles, 26 three wheelers and other vehicles in respect of drunk driving offences.”
He said that these vehicles will not be released at the local Police in respect of drunk driving and neglectful or reckless driving offences and the suspects would be produced before the Magistrate’s Courts.
In addition to that, 1,845 traffic violations had been detected during a 24-hour period until yesterday especially in relation to speeding, negligence and reckless driving.
Further, two fatal accidents were also reported during a 24-hour period ending at 6.00 am yesterday where around 20 persons had also sustained various injuries.DIG Rohana appealed to the public, including drivers, pedestrians and other road users to be vigilant during this festive season to avoid accidents and loss to life and property.
