The investigation into the Brandix Covid cluster has become problematic as some 40 officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) contracted the Covid-19 virus, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera directed the Acting IGP on Thursday to immediately inform him about the team appointed to investigate the Brandix cluster as no probe had been launched.
DIG Rohana said as soon as the Attorney General’s advice was received, the matter was referred to the Colombo Crimes Division by the Acting IGP.
“The delay is because at least 40 officers at the CCD had contracted the virus. Several other officers were also sent to quarantine centres, so it is difficult to act on it at the same time. The other reason is that evidence needed to be recorded from some employees at the Minuwangoda factory,” he said.
Colombo Crimes Division Director had informed the IGP about the inconvenience caused due to a situation, but the IGP has decided to continue with the investigation.
Attorney General Dappula De Livera on October 27 directed the Acting IGP to submit a report within two weeks, after investigating the COVID-19 spread from Brandix.
The AG also directed to check whether there was direct involvement of the Brandix administration or any other government official regarding the spread of the virus in the country.
