The Disaster Management Center (DMC) yesterday issued a heat advisory for the country for today and tomorrow. Besides the Center has issued heat warnings particularly for Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara districts.
Disaster Management Center spokesman Pradeep Kodippili yesterday told the Daily News.
“We expect that hot and humid days will continue in the island for more than a week, probably more than a month,” he said.“The climatologists at Meteorology Department have apprised and cautioned us that the temperature in some regions could rise to “Extreme Caution” ranges,” he said.
The sweltering temperatures are expected to hit highs in the 33 to 41 Celsius especially in the regions of Polonnaruwa, Ampara and Batticaloa, as pointed out by the weathermen. “People do not feel comfortable when the air temperature is between 20°C and 27°C,: they said.
Kodillpili said, “so the public are advised to stay hydrated and be in the shade as much as they can to preserve their ability to deal with heat at all times.”
“The dry conditions will dominate most parts of the country and the will be no rains for most regions,” he explained. A Meteorology Department official said that normal weather will persist throughout the country today (28) and tomorrow except for the Sabaragamuwa Province and the Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts.
Asked what they meant by normal weather, a forecaster said, “There will not be any rains, and heat will continue making things uncomfortable.” Strong gusty winds between 40 to 50 kilometers per hour may be experienced in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matara districts, he said.
