Around 12,000 children are housed in around 400 orphanages countrywide, according to the Commissioner General of Probation and Child Services Department Chandima Sigera.
She said that under the current situation, a decision had been made to conduct an island-wide survey.
She said a consensus would be conducted island-wide between August-September together with the Senses and Statistics Department.
She said some of the children are those who have been abandoned by their parents, some are those who have been involved in wrong deeds, she said, adding that in order to build their personality, it was important for them to grow up in a family environment.
She said the main intention of this survey is to determine the current status of these children and several other points.
