UNP rejects allegations on Swiss Embassy drama

The United National Party (UNP) today rejected allegations that the Swiss Embassy employee who claimed she was abducted had associated with the party and that it was a drama created with the knowledge of some in the party, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday.

He said this in response to a question asked by journalists at a news conference yesterday about an allegation by a person in the government that this lady was associated with the UNP and that the drama enacted with the knowledge of the party.

“No one in the UNP has associated with this employee. However, we have talked about the incident in keeping with our practice of talking on behalf of a person when he or she faces a problem,” Mr. Kariyawasam said. “Is it a crime to talk on behalf of a person when he or she faces a problem."

He said what UNP was concerned about was the diplomatic fallout from this incident.

Mr. Kariyawasam also referred to the proposed Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement saying one must not get surprised if this agreement is signed by the present government.

“Some ministers and MPs in the government had said the 70 per cent of what is written in the agreement are good. Later they might say that the agreement is 90 per cent okay. Do not be surprised if the government actually signs this agreement,” he said.

MPs Ashu Marasinghe and Wijepala Hettiarachchi also referred to the MCC agreement.
