Government likely to lose two thirds majority

The government is likely to lose its two-third majority in Parliament if the Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) exits the government as it has already signaled it intends to form a common alliance to contest future polls.

The SLPP seniors have instructed its younger members to avoid criticizing the SLFP in public and allow them to exit the government if they intend to do so rather than disrespecting them, the Daily Mirror learns. The SLFP's relations with the government have turned so sour that political sources said that it was now only a matter of time that the party exits the government to fulfill its agenda of forming a common alliance to contest future polls.

The SLFP intends to form a common alliance which will be possibly headed by former President and SLFP Leader Maithripala Sirisena himself.

In fact, Sirisena has already struck a cord with some opposition parties signaling that they are now ready to exit to form a common platform to defeat the SLPP Government.

However, government sources said that the SLPP was also in discussions with some minority parties who had expressed willingness to join the government. However, the Daily Mirror learns that this will come at the expense of handing over a state or deputy ministry to the new comers.

The Daily Mirror learns that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya who is also formulating a common political alliance might hold talks with the SLFP once Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa returns back to Colombo from the north. However, this is yet to be finalized.

Political sources said that the coming months will be crucial for the country's political arena as some shifts and changes are expected and while forming the common alliance will get underway, the SLPP also will strengthen its stand by undergoing a revamp and promoting some deputy ministers in cabinet ranks.
