Govt.’s responsibility to prevent country facing blackout: JVP

Stressing that it was the responsibility of the Government to prevent the country from facing a blackout, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today urged the government to withdraw the moves to hand over LNG supply and shares of the Kerawalapitiya Power plant to a US Company.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference that the trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) was forced to resort to trade union action due to the actions of the Government.

“If the country is left to face a blackout, the Government should take that responsibility. The trade unions are forced to resort to trade union action as a result of the clandestine agreements reached to hand over state resources. The CEB employees are not resorting to TU action for their personal demands, but to protect the national assets,” he said.

He said the Government came to power assuring to protect national resources and added that it was now planning to sell the energy sector which was the most important national asset.
