Mahindananda Aluthgamage acquitted and released

The Colombo High Court has acquitted Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage on charges of misappropriating Rs. 3.9 million belonging to the Sri Lanka Free Trade Union Confederation (SLFCC).

The verdict was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige after a lengthy trial that spanned nearly four years.

Announcing the verdict, the High Court Judge stated that the plaintiff had failed to prove any reasonable suspicion on the allegations made against the defendant.

Accordingly, the Judge directed that the accused be acquitted and released under Section 200 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The case was filed against the Minister during the 'Yahapalana' regime for allegedly misappropriating state funds amounting to Rs.3.9 million as the SLFCC President during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's regime. (Daily Mirror)
