Central Bank bond probe: Sabry unaware of Mahendran’s extradition status

Justice Minister Ali Sabry is unaware if Singapore has refused to extradite former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran.

When The Sunday Morning inquired on Friday (27) whether Singapore has refused to extradite Mahendran, Sabry said: “I don’t know. I have asked for a report from the Attorney General (AG), you have to speak to the AG and find out.”

Unconfirmed reports state that Singaporean authorities have refused Sri Lanka’s request to extradite former Central Bank Governor Mahendran over the Central Bank Bond Scam.

Several attempts made to contact AG’s Co-ordinating Officer Nishara Jayaratne to get a comment were unsuccessful.

Earlier this month, Minister Sabry said in Parliament that the case against Mahendran had been halted due to Mahendran’s absence.

“The case has been filed in a Special High Court but can’t proceed, since notices cannot be issued on Mahendran because he has left the country,” the Minister said, in response to a question from MP Lakshman Kiriella.
