Sanitary pad tax should be removed – Minister Namal

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Namal Rajapaksa said that the tax on sanitary pads should be removed and locally produced brands should be promoted.

“The tax should be removed on sanitary pads, local production should be increased and the target is to promote locally manufactured sanitary pads,” he said.

He added that the issue should be looked into, and according to the statements of certain Parliamentarians, there is not a major price difference in the new formula.

“As per the statements of State Ministers Shehan Semasinghe and Ajith Nivard Cabraal, there is no price difference as per the new formula that was introduced,” he added.

Last year the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister had raised concerns when former finance minister Mangala Samaraweera stated in the budget on a sanitary pad tax.

“At the last year’s budget, I raised concerns on taxing sanitary pads and how unfair it is for women as it is an essential item,” he said.

Many activists raised concerns on social media over the tax on sanitary pads since it gravely affects the women in the country.
