Fly infestation halts Kalpitiya Kite Surfing Festival

The highly anticipated Kite Surfing Festival in Kalpitiya sponsored by the Sri Lanka Tourism has been cancelled due to a severe fly infestation in the area.

“Following the monsoon rains and subsequent flooding in Kalpitiya, there is a significant fly infestation. As a result, we will have to cancel the kite surfing festival,” Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Chairman Chalaka Gajabahu said at the ‘Navigating Challenges and Seizing Opportunities in Sri Lanka’s Tourism Industry’ forum organised by the Council for Business with Britain last week.

Kalpitiya, renowned for its consistent wind conditions, is a dream destination for kite surfers. The region experiences two main wind seasons — the winter season from December to March with strong, steady winds ranging from 20 to 30 knots, and the summer season from May to October with gentler winds suitable for beginners and a more relaxed ride.

The Kalpitiya lagoon, with its flat, shallow water, offers ideal conditions for learning kitesurfing, ensuring a smooth and safe experience.

Apart from kite surfing, Kalpitiya offers a range of other attractions. Visitors can engage in dolphin and whale watching, explore the historical Dutch Fort, or take a boat trip to the stunning Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary.

Despite the cancellation of the festival, Kalpitiya remains a captivating destination where wind, water and adventure converge.

The SLTPB Chief assured that steps are being taken to address the infestation and restore the area to its usual pristine condition with the assistance of the local Government authorities and Health Ministry.
