UN clarifies its role in Sri Lanka following allegations

The United Nations (UN) has clarified its role in Sri Lanka after it was accused of being biased and supporting some Presidential candidates.

The UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer said that the UN has been working in Sri Lanka for decades.

She said the UN is committed to sustainable development, human rights, peace and reconciliation.

Singer said the UN interacts with all to urge respect for these goals and principles and as the the UN representative in Sri Lanka these are the values she strictly adheres to in all her discussions

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was quoted recently as saying that Hanaa Singer had told him he was not as bad as what some people claimed he was.

Singer had reportedly said this at a meeting with the SLPP candidate recently.

This drew strong comments on social media against the UN Resident Coordinator accusing her of supporting Rajapaksa.
